Welcome to Rangjung Yeshe Institute
Rangjung Yeshe Institute offers courses in Buddhist philosophy and Tibetan, Sanskrit and Nepali languages. The courses combine traditional Tibetan Buddhist teachings with a modern Buddhist Studies perspective. All classes are held in the unique setting of a Tibetan monastery in Boudhanath, Kathmandu, Nepal.

Students can earn BA and MA degrees in Buddhist Studies and Himalayan Languages or study for shorter, intensive periods. For visiting students, study-abroad programs in Buddhist philosophy and language as well as a range of intensive summer programs in Buddhist philosophy and related languages are offered.

Online Learning Program

Registration is now open for Rangjung Yeshe Institute's Online Learning Program!  We are currently offering four courses online in a variety of course formats.  Our semester-long course (also offered for credit), Foundations of Buddhism, begins January 9, 2012.  Our short courses are open for registration at any time and run for varying lengths.


This semester’s course offerings include:

  • Foundations of Buddhism (Opens January 2012) - A 14-week course exploring the integral points of Buddhist history, culture, and philosophy.
  • Cultivating Patience: Chapter Six of The Way of the Bodhisattva (Bodhicaryāvatāra) by Śāntideva - This short course offers practical methods to help us abandon anger and frustration in our everyday lives.  Enroll anytime!
  • The Way of the Bodhisattva (Bodhicaryāvatāra) by Śāntideva (Parts One and Two) - A semester-long course about understanding bodhicitta and its application in our lives. This course is offered for self-study only.
  • Buddhist Ethics: A short course examining ethics from a variety of perspectives. Enroll anytime!

Summer Courses at Rangjung Yeshe Institute in Nepal

Registration is open for RYI's Summer Program. The Intensive Summer Program runs eight week long courses in colloquial Tibetan (beginning, intermediate and advanced level), beginning Sanskrit, beginning Nepali and a Buddhist Studies course. The Buddhist Studies program provides a living exposure to Buddhist philosophy and a practical introduction to the richness of personal meditation training. The Summer Program starts on June 13th and applications are accepted from October 1st 2011 to April 30th 2012.

All summer programs are fully accredited by Kathmandu University!

 

From November 1st, applications are accepted for the Translator Training Program

The program, starting on June 13th 2012, is designed to allow students to become oral translators in 12 months, capable of serving as an interpreter for a Tibetan teacher giving basic Buddhist teachings.  The program will be offered at an Intermediate Level, which assumes a year of prior training in both Colloquial and Classical Tibetan language. read more...
