Studying at RYI

CBS ONLINE makes available the same blend of traditional monastic and western academic education offered at Rangjung Yeshe Institute’s Centre for Buddhist Studies at Kathmandu University, allowing students to experience the diversity and depth of two complementary scholarly traditions. Click here to apply for the Fall semester.

Courses include:

1) Mūlamadhyamakakārikā by Nāgārjuna, a classic Buddhist text that uses logic to challenge our assumptions about the nature of reality.

2) Bodhicaryāvatāra by Śāntideva, another classic that teaches the preciousness of bodhicitta, explaining how to practice generosity, discipline, patience, diligence, and meditation while striving to recognize the awakened mind.

3) Buddhist Ethics short course, which tackles such difficult issues as vegetarianism, the role of women, and the role of violence within the Buddhist tradition, in a thoughtful way that doesn’t insist on easy answers.

The Mūlamadhyamakakārikā and the Bodhicaryāvatāra are taught by Khenpo Jampa Donden, over the span of two semesters. The first half is taught from August 30 - December 11, 2010 and the second half is taught during the Spring semester (January 10 - April 23, 2010). Enrollment is open now for the first semester. These courses are available in four course formats. The Buddhist Ethics course is taught by Dr. Stephen Jenkins and runs for five weeks as a Self-Study course.

As a registered student for one of the two Interactive versions of a course, you have access to an online instructor, who will address general questions and moderate discussions in the course Forum. Course materials are organized by week, with each week offering some combination of video and audio lectures in English (or in both Tibetan and English, or in Tibetan-only Audio), PowerPoint lectures, and audio transcripts. Course materials can be accessed at any point during the week, and previous week's recordings are available for review and study.

If you opt for the Self-Study Plus version of a course, you have access to all the full-length and edited video and audio included above, PowerPoint lectures, audio transcripts, but not to the moderated discussions in the Forum.

In the Self-Study version of a course, you will have access to the audio and video versions of the teachings, in both English and Tibetan, and to the Tibetan-only audio version. The Buddhist Ethics course is taught in English and includes video and written reference material.
