Deadline: Application to the Translator Training Program runs from February 1 – May 15.

How to Apply

To apply to the Translator Training Program at CBS, one must complete the following five steps:

  1. Submit the application form and statement of purpose online
  2. Submit the application fee
  3. Submit letter(s) of reference
  4. Submit guarantee of employment (if serving the additional year with your own sangha)
  5. Submit the financial aid form (if applying for a scholarship)


Once all documents have been received, the Translator Admittance Committee at RYI will decide on admission into the program within one month and notify the applicant of the outcome via email.

Deadline for submitting the online registration and all application materials: May 15, 2008.

Please note that only a limited number of students can be admitted to the Translator Training Program. The admission process is continual and the program may fill prior to the deadline. For further information about the admission process, contact the Director of Studies, Andreas Doctor.

Step 1 – Application Form and Statement of Purpose

Click the link below to fill out the application form and submit it online. The application form consists of two parts:

1) The general application
2) the statement of purpose.

For the statement of purpose, you may consider writing it separately in a word processor and paste it into the essay portion of the application form. This statement (approx. 500 words) should describe your general background, academic interests and reasons for applying to the Translator Training Program.

Step 2 – Application Fee

For Nepalese citizens the application fee is 500 rps, to be paid at the CBS office in Boudhanath

*Note: due to the time it takes for regular mail to reach Nepal, sending regular checks will delay your application process by 3 to 4 weeks.


Step 3 – Letter(s) of reference

Applicants should request a letter of recommendation from a Lama in the Tibetan tradition evaluating their suitability for the Translator Training Program.


Step 4 – Guarantee of Employment (if continuing work with own sangha)

For students who choose to return to their sangha to serve as an interpreter following graduation, the sangha must provide documentation at the time of application of a willingness and ability to support financially the interpreter and a resident Tibetan teacher for a minimum of one year. This letter may be sent by regular mail or scanned and emailed to RYI.


Step 5 –Financial Aid Form (if applying for a scholarship)

RYI strives to offer scholarships to all students who get accepted into the program but lack sponsors or the financial means to pay the full tuition.

Admission

  1. Once all components of the application have been received, the admissions committee will review the application. In making its decision, the committee will be judging the applicant on an all-round assessment of the application.
  2. A final decision on acceptance will however only be made following a personal interview or, if circumstances prevent a personal meeting, a telephone interview.
  3. Following the interview, a decision on admission will be made within two weeks and students will be notified of the outcome via email.
  4. Successful applicants must then accept or decline the admissions offer within two weeks in an email reply.
  5. To secure his or her place in the program, the students who accept the admissions offer must then submit a tuition deposit of US$ 1500.
  6. The deposit is refundable, minus administration costs and transfer fees (US$ 100), until May 15. After May 15 the deposit is non-refundable.
